About the Cultural Dialogue

The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea announced the launch of the year-long series of the UAE-Korea Cultural Dialogue 2020.  Under the theme ‘Converging Cultures’, the UAE-Korea Cultural Dialogue 2020 will include a roll out of events, workshops, and public talks that celebrate and recognize Korean and Emirati culture in both countries starting January 2020.

Objectives

  • Exchange of views and concepts related to the cultural field of bilateral cooperation between both countries.
  • On-going communication between the cultures of both countries.
  • Consolidating the cultural and knowledge rapprochement between the peoples of both countries.
  • Activating the cultural fields between both countries.

Bilateral Relationship

1980 Diplomatic relations between the UAE and Korea were established. 1987  the opening of UAE embassy in Seoul in 1987. 2001: The late President, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, met with South Korean prime minister Lee Han-Dong in 2001 in Abu Dhabi as part of the prime minister’s Gulf tour. 2009: HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, signed a historic nuclear agreement with South Korean Lee Myung-bak in 2009. this led to other agreements on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the economic, political, cultural and educational fields.  This marked the beginning of the UAE-Korea strategic relationship. 2010: The King Sejong Institute, the first organisation in the UAE teaching Korean language and culture  opened at Zayed University in 2010. 2013: The Korea Festival, which showcases Korean culture, has been annually held in Abu Dhabi since 2013. 2016  Korean Cultural Center (KCC) Opened in Abu Dhab UAE-Korea Cultural Dialogue Fields:
  1. Tangible and Intangible heritage.
  2. Literature and languages.
  3. Visual and performing arts.
  4. Audiovisual media.
  5. Design.
  6. Cultural and creative industries and related technologies.
  7. Supporting youth and talents in the cultural field.
  8. Arts education.
