Reading Hour initiative to promote a nation-wide culture of reading

The Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development launched today a community literacy campaign entitled “Reading Hour”, which is one of the National Month of Reading’s initiatives to promote a culture of reading in the UAE.
The Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, HE Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, stressed that the Reading Hour campaign addresses all members of the public to motivate them, instill a love of reading and an appreciation of culture among them. Therefore, contributing to raising awareness of the importance of reading to creating sustainable development and building a flourishing future.
“Encouraging daily literacy is a sustainable cognitive goal that supports the implementation of the national strategy for reading and links it to a pioneering UAE model in the fields of science, knowledge and literature. Reading is also an essential foundation to nurture the values of tolerance, dialogue and cultural exchange,” she said. The idea of the campaign is to invite all segments of the UAE community from government agencies and cultural institutions, to citizens and residents to allocate an hour for reading every day. This will spread the culture of reading and initiate social change among families and all age groups. All family members engaging in the reading activity will benefit from the outputs of knowledge, in terms of character building and development of communication skills, which are needed to enhance peer engagement and improve understanding of the world.
