Speed Reading Challenge

• Girls: Roald Dahl’s BFG and Boys: Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (library collection)

• Knockout Round: 120 words in 60 seconds.
• Semi-Finals: 200 words in 2 minutes.
• Finals: 250-280 words in 3 minutes.
• The book with a timer is displayed on the Apple TV.

Judging Process:
• If a student takes longer than the allotted time , a bell will ring to indicate that their time is up.
• This activity aims to celebrate reading and encourages students to engage with books in a fun and competitive manner , fostering a love for reading.

Silent Reading Contest

• Set Up a Reading Space
• shelf with reading materials, or students may bring their own books.
• Prepare a tracking sheet for participants to log the books or pages read during the contest.
Rules: No talking, whispering, or distractions (e.g., tablets).
Participants must remain seated and read silently throughout the break.
Scoring Criteria:
• Pages read within the allotted time.
• Books completed (if short).
• Bonus points for a handwritten book report or drawing of a character/setting.

Book Tasting

The librarian displayed books from different genres. Students visited each table and checked all the genres. They had to indicate how much they liked each genre by putting “yummy,” “not yummy,” or “very yummy.”

IMMERSIVE READING ACTIVITIES

The reading culture at Woodlem Park Hamidiya School is deeply embedded through various initiatives. D.E.A.R. Time is conducted regularly to help students at different levels delve deeper into the world of books. Fluency and expression are demonstrated through read-aloud sessions and discussions that utilize questioning techniques based on the books they have read. Teachers encourage students to engage in different genres, promoting both academic and personal growth.
